Richard Zweier

Mr. Zweier has been choral conductor at Vernon Township High School since the opening of the building in 1975, and currently teaches sectionals for the VTHS Meistersingers.  His undergraduate work in Music Education was completed at Lebanon Valley College, and he holds a Master of Music degree in Musicology from Manhattan School of Music.  His graduate studies also include work at LaSalle University, Montclair University, and Westminster Choir College.

As guest conductor, Mr. Zweier has served as conductor of the Mississippi State University High School Choral Camp, three Region I choirs, The New Jersey Opera Festival Choir and the 1984 New Jersey All-State Chorus.  He is the founding director of the Vernon Area Community Choir which he conducted from 1989 to 1994.  Mr. Zweier has served as musical director for 12 VTHS spring musicals.

Mr. Zweier is Academic Chairman for Performing and Visual Arts at VTHS.  He has served on the state boards of the New Jersey Music Educators Association and the New Jersey American Choral Directors Association.  Offices he has held include president of the Sussex County Music Educators Association and the North Jersey School Music Association.  Mr. Zweier has managed Region choruses, the New Jersey All-State Chorus, and fulfilled the roles of All-State Choral Procedures Chairman and All-State Conductor Selection Committee Chairman.

In 1994, Mr. Zweier was the recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities grant and participated in a month long Mozart seminar in Vienna, Austria.  In 1997 he continued his research by winning a grant from the Council for Basic Education which enabled him to spend another two weeks in Vienna.  His travels have also taken him to Florence and Venice in Italy, Salzburg, Munich, Prague, as well as San Francisco and New Orleans in the United States.

At Vernon Township High School, Mr. Zweier also enjoys teaching Advanced Placement Music Theory.  He is a faculty consultant for the College Board in AP Music Theory, and has for four years served as a reader for the Educational Testing Service grading the free response portion of the AP Music Theory Exams at the College of New Jersey in Trenton.  Additionally, Mr. Zweier has appeared as clinician for the NJMEA convention and as an adjudicator for State Teen Arts, NJMEA, and the New Jersey Governor's School.
